Los Angeles County Perinatal Summit 2005

LA Best Babies Network, LA County Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health Programs (MCAH) and the March of Dimes are planning partners in the Perinatal Summit

“Healthy Births Through Healthy Communities: Connecting Leadership to Achieve a Unified Commitment to Action”

OUR MISSION : We strive to optimize the health and well being of every pregnant woman and their children through improvements in the quality and delivery of equitable care from prenatal period through the first years of life.

The two day Perinatal Summit event held October 24 and 25, 2005 was the first success in our goals to:

  • ENGAGE COMMUNITIES - To engage communities and exchange knowledge of contributors to optimal birth outcomes and community-based interventions.
  • CONNECT LEADERSHIP - To unite efforts and achieve synergy to improve birth outcomes.
  • BUILD SUSTAINABLE POLICIES - To build and sustain health care policies to eliminate disparities in care.
  • ACHIEVE A UNIFIED COMMITMENT TO ACTION - To build a unified commitment to effectively improve birth outcomes.

The event convened over 170 people representing more than 60 organizations. Participants of the Summit collectively developed a set of recommendations for interventions aimed at improving pregnancy and birth outcomes.  The recommendations were forwarded to key health leaders, representing health plans, hospitals, public agencies and foundations on Day 2 of the Summit on October 25, 2006. As a result of the work on Day 2, the recommendations were focused into five overarching areas of action.

After identifying the key perinatal issues and recommended interventions for systems change at the two day event, Summit planning partners entered Phase II, the development of the Perinatal Summit Action Plan with health leaders committed to action under each of the areas. We are now in Phase III, the Implementation Phase for an 18 month period July 2006 – December 2007.

***The event itself and the dissemination of the proceedings and action plan were made possible by the generous donations of our sponsors First 5 LA, the California Wellness Foundation, Kaiser Permanente, the California Community Foundation, La Care Health Plan and The California Endowment.
