Southern California CenteringPregnancy® Consortium

About CenteringPregnancy®

CenteringPregnancy® is a group care model for expectant mothers. The model seeks to empower the expectant mother to take control of her healthcare by providing training on clinical topics and giving the mother the skills she needs to be prepared for the arrival of her infant. Throughout the process mothers within the group create a social network that provides support to everyone and improves birth outcomes.

The Centering Pregnancy® model modifies the design of traditional prenatal care. Centering Pregnancy® requires the women to have their initial intake into their obstetric care in the usual manner with history and physical examination occurring within the office/clinic space. After the initial registration, the expectant moms are invited to actively engage with 8-12 other expectant mothers with similar due dates where they complete their prenatal care through regular group visits.

Women begin group care between 12 and 16 weeks of pregnancy and continue through the early postpartum period. During the meetings led by a provider expectant mothers receive prenatal and self-care education and receive Provider visits if needed.

About CenteringPregnancy® training

The CenteringPregnancy® training is a 2-day intensive training providing an opportunity to learn about the CenteringPregnancy® model. The interactive training will demonstrate how to implement the CenteringPregnancy® model within a clinic/ practice setting. Experts from the Centering Healthcare Institute (CHI) will facilitate the training and be available to answer questions and provide advice on how to get started. Clinics selected for the training will receive the training at no cost.

If you would like more information about CenteringPregnancy® please contact Sandra Trinidad at STrinidad@LABestBabies.org or (213) 250-7273 ext. 111.

The CenteringPregnancy® training relies on the health provider and health educator to function as facilitators during these group sessions with their clients. The CenteringPregnancy® training will demonstrate how this is accomplished.

What is a consortium?

A consortium is a grouping of sites in any stage of development of a CenteringPregnancy® model of care. These sites may be located in a city, larger geographic area such as a county, state, or even in a region such as Southern California.

About CenteringPregnancy® Consortium

The Centering Pregnancy® Consortium brings together clinical practices interested in building an innovative practice supportive of approaches that seek to build self efficacy, improve relationships between client and provider and coordinate services to improve the quality of prenatal care in Southern California.

LA Best Babies Network and Eisner Pediatric & Family Center are developing the CenteringPregnancy® Consortium. One of the primary goals of the Consortium will be to expand the CenteringPregnancy® model to other practices in Southern California. Although the Consortium has not been launched, sites that participate in the CenteringPregnancy® training will be eligible to be a part of the consortium.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is CenteringPregnancy®?

CenteringPregnancy® is a model of group prenatal care that engages 8-12 expectant mothers with similar estimated due dates for their routine prenatal care in a clinic. The Centering model allows women to receive their prenatal visits with their physician while receiving health education delivered in a group setting. The program is inspiring and engages women to take responsibility for their own health care, create a supportive network, and yield improved birth outcomes.

How can my practice become involved in the training?

The training is open to Prenatal Care providers located in Los Angeles County having at least 30 deliveries per month. Practices should have a willingness to learn and later implement the CenteringPregnancy® model within their practice. Organizations interested in the training will have to discuss and engage their leadership to be able to initiate CenteringPregnancy® group within 6 months of receiving the training.

What does it take to be a part of the consortium?

If you would like more information about CenteringPregnancy® please contact Sandra Trinidad at STrinidad@LABestBabies.org or (213) 250-7273 ext. 111.

What kind of support is there to be a part of the consortium?

Training is supported through a community grant from the March of Dimes and provided by the Centering Healthcare Institute staff. LA Best Babies Network and Eisner Pediatric & Family Center will provide the technical assistance and support to participating sites in their ability to initiate CenteringPregnancy® group care.

What are the benefits for a practice in using the CenteringPregnancy model?

Various studies conducted on the CenteringPregnancy® model demonstrate improved birth outcomes such as:

  • decreased rates of low birth weight (1,2)
  • improved knowledge of infant care and healthy practices during pregnancy (3)

For more details on the Benefits of the CenteringPregnancy® model, please refer to the Benefits of Centering Pregnancy.
